Alcohol

Alcohol in a dream symbolizes unlawful (haram) wealth. Whoever dreams of drinking alcohol will commit a major sin, yet will receive abundant sustenance. If someone dreams of drinking alcohol without being reprimanded for it, it indicates they will acquire wealth through impermissible means. However, some interpreters say it could also mean acquiring wealth through lawful (halal) means. If someone is being reproached while drinking, it signifies that the person reproaching them will oppose them or be involved in a dispute with them.

If one dreams of receiving a river of alcohol, it signifies a trial or temptation related to worldly matters (dunya). If the person enters the river, they will be misled and fall into sins proportionate to how deep they wade into it. For someone planning to marry or enter a partnership, since alcohol easily mixes with other substances, it symbolizes acceptance or union. For a ruler or official, consuming alcohol indicates removal from their position.

Drinking alcohol mixed with water represents wealth that is partly halal and partly haram. Some say it represents joint ownership or partnership in wealth. Whoever dreams of making or distilling alcohol will serve a ruler or authority, and significant matters will be conducted through them.

If someone dreams of being invited to a gathering where there is alcohol and an abundance of fruits, they will be called to fight in the path of God and will die as a martyr (shaheed).

Alcohol in a dream can also indicate chaos, evil, hostility, and hatred. Consuming it may point to recovery from an illness, or alternatively, to a loss of sanity due to madness or extreme anxiety. If the dreamer is in a dispute, due to the boldness and shamelessness of drunkards in speech, it indicates they will be in the wrong. If unemployed, they will end up serving someone else. If poor, they will become wealthy. If unmarried, they will marry. If ill, they will recover.

If someone dreams of drinking alcohol among a group where there is drinking and dancing, it implies apostasy among those people, disobedience, rebellion against authority, and breaking of oaths and promises.

If the drinker in the dream is a scholar or a student of knowledge, it indicates that their knowledge will increase.

Different types of intoxicating drinks in dreams carry different meanings. If the drink is made from grapes, the dreamer may eat grapes out of season, or—due to linguistic similarity in Arabic between the words for grape (‘inab) and shame (‘ayb)—commit a shameful act, or alternatively receive some halal sustenance.

Whoever dreams of buying or making an intoxicating drink will engage in something forbidden and deserve divine punishment.

Intoxicants in dreams may also signify lies, nonsense, revealing secrets, or sexual immorality.

Due to the meanings of its synonyms—such as ‘akkar, sulaf, ruha‘dzuz—alcohol and its consumption in dreams can also symbolize sin, a promiscuous woman, disobedience to parents, selling real estate, a companion or friend, loss of property or children, carelessness despite hardship and exhaustion, marrying an old woman, foolishness, and ignorance.

If a deceased person is seen drinking intoxicants in a dream, it symbolizes their enjoyment in Paradise—since wine is one of the drinks of the people of Paradise—unless they were known to have indulged in it sinfully in this world.

For someone intending to marry, since it mixes easily with water, dreaming of an intoxicating drink carries a positive meaning.
